This objective comprises many fine and worthy words and aspirations which are fully supported. Unfortunately, however, in practice Camden Planning Department's actions totally betray these worthy aims and objectives. The Planning team is almost always complicit in allowing residents in Conservation Areas nevertheless to completely fell trees on their property almost at whim, with no substantive justification. Camden must be much more ready to serve TPOs when requests to fell are not justified (eg. by structural problems allegedly caused by the tree, or by dangerous trees). Camden must also make publicly available its list of TPOs for each of its Conservation Area in order to make transparent its allegedly pro-active approach to tree preservation. At present the lack of a published list and the lack of new TPOs being served over the last year or so suggests that Camden's approach is in fact too laissez-faire and allows far too many trees to be completely felled, as opposed to being sensitvely managed by prudent pruning, crown reduction etc.

Camden needs to pro-actively lobby the Government (and the GLA, Tulip Siddiq) in order to improve the legislation around the management of trees in Conservation Areas so that the starting presumption is that healthy, safe, mature trees should not be felled in response to spurious requests from residents. Instead sensible, and ongoing tree management measures (eg. crown reduction, pruning, thinning) should required by Camden. The legislation around Section 211 Orders (under the 1990 Town & Country Planning Act) needs to be improved in favour of retention and management of trees, also recognising that visibility of trees in rear gardens is equally important as trees in front gardens. Biodiversity is often at its maximum in continuous bands of trees at the foot of rear gardens in Camden. Camden must stiop paying lip-service to these worthy causes and must actually start tto play a very pro-active role in tree preservation for reasons of both biodiversity and climate change/pollution mitigation.

Camden needs better policy around street tree pollarding which can sometimes be excessive, as pointed out by Camden Extinction Rebellion in the Camden New Journal. This would also likely represent a cost saving and so be a useful action from both an ecological and a financial perspective. Camden should also provide clearer information about how residents can adopt street trees - both existing trees and newly planted saplings. This could be through requesting local people water certain trees regularly (through flyering letterboxes). Camden should also provide clearer information about the rules around 'boxing' street trees with mini-planters - what are the rules on this? Who can do it? How would you recommend the boxing be done to reduce the chance of damage to the tree? What sort of plants would thrive in the shade of a street tree?
