The section on access to nature needs clearer emphasis on the cross-over between access to nature and inclusive transport. For most residents, who do not have a private car, methods of transport like bikes and scooters will massively increase the range of nature that is within 'easy reach', while still continuing to reduce the need to use shared public transport during and in the aftermath of a global pandemic that is likely to impose elements of social distancing on our society for years. It should be more clearly stated that road use adaptations such as segregated bike lanes, low traffic neighbourhoods and school streets will actively help access to nature for the most disadvantaged people in the borough of Camden. This section is also missing any reference to city farms and the key role they play in engaging young people with the natural world. We are lucky to have city farms in this borough and they should be explicitly stated as being of value in terms of access to nature for poor communities. The section on access to nature is also missing any mention of gardens, be they individual, shared or communal. How can people 'take over' a section of communcal garden and use it to grow vegetables, for example? How will the value of trees in private gardens be valued in terms of the benefits they provide for neighbouring second and third floor flats with no gardens? Because gardens are not mentioned in this document, there is also no mention of how paving over gardens to create parking (which is sometimes then rented out to third parties!) disadvantages local people without gardens, in terms of their street space environment. There is also a separate issue around gardens and storage of personal modes of transport. It is crazy how any resident can pay to 'adopt' a parking space for a tonne of metal that pollutes the environment, but we cannot pay an equivalent sum to adopt that same parking space as a pop-up vegetable garden, or public bench plus sunflowers (for example) - something that benefits everyone around me in the community, rather than harms them. Similarly, why subsidise parking for cars but then fail so badly to provide suitable safe parking for bikes and scooters? All the bike boxes in Camden are massively oversubscribed.
